The Business Portal ECON.BG is an Internet-based bilingual (Bulgarian and English) media presenting all types of information important for the business world and the general public with interests in economy and economic development. The site was created through a joint project of the Center for Economic Development (CED) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and was officially launched on 25 April 2001. Since its launch the structure and the overall platform of the portal has been generally revised several times, with the last major improvements being made in October 2007.

As of today the Portal operates on MySQL database and PHP programming language, with a database of several millions unique items in the different categories.

ECON.BG comprises of eleven major sections, namely News, Events, Interviews, Analyses, Advertisements, Work, Finance, Law, Companies, Links and Forum. The main goal of the team is to keep the data in each section updated with most recent information, thus ensuring the Portal is an up-to-date, reliable and thorough information source suiting the needs of the business people.

ECON.BG follows several major principles:

• Providing all available information concerning Bulgarian economy online through systematized links
• Publishing information, which is not available in the Internet space, for example, catalogue of companies which do not have own webpages
• Giving opportunity for all types of user-generated content (news, events, advertisements, companies, etc.)
• Creation and distribution of original information through news, interviews, inquiries, statistical diagrams
• Keeping an easily accessible archive of the whole information uploaded on the site since its creation in 2001.
• Free access to the information for all users
• Providing users with a platform for sharing opinion and discussing different topics

Currently ECON.BG is accessed by over 230 000 unique visitors monthly, generating more than 1.5 mln pageviews of the site. In ECON.BG one can find:

• Information about over 115 000 companies: the online catalogue provides opportunity for presentation of companies and organizations in text, graphics, or multimedia format;
• Job announcements. This is the place for an employee to find a job, and for employers – to publish free announcements of the positions available;
• Hot offers: the business portal provides the audience with information about attractive promotions and discounts;
• Analyses in 16 thematic areas. The Portal publishes the latest macroeconomic, sectoral and regional surveys about the country;
• Up-to-date information flow: news and forthcoming events in the economic and public life in Bulgaria and around the world;
• Free access to the complete legislative regulations. The Portal publishes the latest amendments in the regulations, organized in a well-structured database;
• A range of hyperlinks in 24 areas with corresponding categories. The links in ECON.BG are a guide in the Internet;
• Current quotes of the currency and capital markets with rich archives and a possibility for graph and number references for past periods.
